Request

I am currently preparing an environmental review of a site in Corby, which has two registered landfills adjacent to the site (to the north and east). Both are recorded as registered landfills; however, I have not been able to find further information online. The landfills are recorded as follows: 1. Midland Land Reclamation Ltd - Cowthick Limestone Quarry, Weldon, Corby, Northamptonshire (license ref. C/024) 2. Shanks Midlands Ltd - Weldon Landfill, Cowthick Ironstone Gullet, Weldon, Corby, Northamptonshire, NN17 3JG (license ref. C/025) Could you please provide further information about these landfills / the status of the landfills, including providing the permits and advising what active mitigation measures are in place to prevent landfill gas migration?

Response

We respond to requests for information that we hold under the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIR). The Regulations requires that we respond to requests by advising you whether information is held or not, and if so by providing you with that information.

 Information provided

Please see attached permits in response to this enquiry.

Midland Land Reclamation Cowthick Quarry is now Suez Recycling and Recovery UK Limited Corby Landfill permit ref PP3134SL.

The site is no longer accepting waste, the site has been restored and is now in aftercare.

Shanks Midlands Ltd Weldon Landfill is now FCC Weldon Landfill, permit ref BV4525IB

Weldon landfill permit comes in two parts:

BV4525IB V009 is the current permit.

BV4525IB V010 is an admin variation to change the company address.

The site is currently classed as an active landfill though waste is currently not being accepted at the site.

Both sites are still producing landfill gas which is extracted and combusted in a gas engine to create electricity.

Perimeter gas wells are located around each site in order to detect any gas migration.

Landfill gas migration is controlled by gas balancing and increased gas extraction in localised areas should any migration be detected at the site perimeter.

Please refer to the Open Government Licence which explains the permitted use of this information.
